Nasci no Porto, Portugal, em 1974, logo após a “Revolução dos Cravos” que derrubou o regime fascista mais antigo da Europa, num país com décadas de atraso em termos de desenvolvimento e considerado uma das nações mais pobres da Europa.
Ao crescer no Portugal dos anos 80 e 90, assisti ao longe a uma outra revolução – a revolução da tecnologia de informação – liderada por Bill Gates e outros empreendedores e inovadores visionários.
Sonhava fazer parte desse mundo.
Além de sonhar, não havia muito mais que pudesse fazer. Não havia bolsas de estudo para as universidades de tecnologia nos EUA e mesmo em Portugal, o acesso a competências digitais de classe mundial era muito limitado. A única coisa que podia fazer (além de sonhar) era aprender a programar e arriscar. Acabei por lançar um projeto tecnológico fora de Portugal que tive a sorte de ter tido sucesso.
Mas, ao longo de todos estes anos, estava claro para mim que existia uma enorme lacuna entre as pessoas que faziam parte da revolução tecnológica e os que seriam deixados para trás.
Hoje, acredito que preencher esta lacuna de conhecimento – entre os que são capazes de contribuir para a nova economia digital e os que não possuem as competências necessárias – é a missão social mais importante a que me posso dedicar.
Em 2018, à medida que se aproximava o momento da minha Oferta Pública Inicial (IPO), não podia ignorar a sensação de que tinha de contribuir para resolver este problema de forma a que tivesse impacto.
A filantropia não é a norma cultural em Portugal. Muitas vezes não é sequer socialmente aceite na maior parte do Sul da Europa, onde se espera que o Estado providencie quase tudo e até as instituições filantrópicas são por vezes vistas com um certo grau de desconfiança.
Tudo isto tornou mais forte esta vontade de doar dois terços da minha riqueza em vida e no momento da minha morte a uma nova Fundação focada em Portugal, e na missão de transformar Portugal numa Sociedade do Conhecimento.
Acredito profundamente que a resposta à procura pela felicidade está no conhecimento.
Conhecimento do mundo e conhecimento de nós mesmos.
A nossa Fundação vai estar empenhada em criar uma sociedade onde o desenvolvimento humano possa ser alcançado ao potenciar a experiência humana, tanto a nível interno como externo.
Espero poder criar uma pequena placa de Petri a partir de Portugal, com forte impacto no nosso país, e com isso, quem sabe, descobrir algo que valha a pena partilhar com o resto do mundo.
I was born in Porto, Portugal in 1974, just after the “Carnation Revolution” that toppled Europe’s longest lasting fascist regime, in a Portugal that was decades behind in terms of development, left behind as one of the poorest nations in Europe.
Growing up in Portugal in the 80s and 90s, I witnessed from afar another revolution – the information technology revolution – led by Bill Gates and other visionary entrepreneurs and innovators.
I dreamt about being part of that world.
Besides dreaming, there was not much I could do. No scholarships were available for the top tech universities in the US, and even in Portugal the access to world class digital skills was very poor. The only other thing I could do (besides dreaming) was to teach myself how to code, and take a huge gamble starting a technology business out of Portugal, which is what I eventually did and miraculously had the fortune to succeed at.
But all these years, it was clear in my mind that a huge gap was being built between those humans that were part of the technology revolution and those that would be left behind.
Today, I believe that bridging the knowledge gap between humans that are able to contribute to the new digital economy and those who lack the necessary skills – is the most important social endeavour I can dedicate myself to.
As I approached my IPO in 2018, a strong urge to contribute to solve this problem in an impactful way emerged in me.
Philanthropy is not culturally expected (and believe it or not even socially recognised) in Portugal and most of Southern Europe, where the state is expected to provide for pretty much everything and therefore charities are looked with a degree of suspicion.
This made me feel even stronger about dedicating two thirds of my wealth during my life and upon my death to a new Foundation focused in Portugal, and on the mission of transforming Portugal into a knowledge society.
I deeply believe the answer to the human quest for happiness is in knowledge.
Knowledge of the world, and knowledge of ourselves.

I hope to be able to develop a small petri dish out of Portugal, creating strong impact in our beloved small nation, and with that, who knows, discover something worth being shared with the rest of the world.
