I am honoured to accept the invitation to join the Giving Pledge.

Thirty years ago I discovered first-hand the transforming power of generosity. I was a student from China who, thanks to the kindness of others, was given a scholarship to study in the US. People took a chance on me and, in doing so, opened a door to a new continent, a new community and a new world of learning and opportunity. This was life-changing and I have not looked back.

Since then a combination of good fortune and hard work has given me far more than our family need. It is my great pleasure and privilege to pledge that I will give the majority of my wealth to philanthropic causes. Running a business has much greater meaning in the knowledge that I can channel resources to help others. I want to enable others to reach their potential, to make great scientific discoveries, to release artistic talent, and to gain a better understanding of our world.

It was not so long ago that lack of resources was an obstacle for me to achieve my dream of learning and personal development, and I am discovering great joy in now being able to remove this barrier for some others.

Inspired by seeing the impact of others’ generosity, I set up the Huo Family Foundation with a mission to support education, communities and the pursuit of knowledge. I am still at the beginning of my philanthropic journey and I have much to learn. I want to become more effective in my giving and I am delighted to be joining with others in the Giving Pledge so that we can collaborate and learn from each other.

I am excited by the prospect of playing our part in making the world a better place for generations to come.
