The Giving Pledge at 15: A growing, global community changing philanthropy and impacting the world

The Giving Pledge community welcomes 11 new signatories and continues to support progress on urgent issues around the world.

As the Giving Pledge marks its 15th anniversary, signatories will gather this week with a focus on learning, connection, and continued efforts to turn their philanthropic commitments into catalytic action. This year, the Pledge welcomes 11 new signatories from around the world—the largest cohort since 2021—and builds on years of shared learning and bold giving towards solving the world’s most pressing issues.

From a promise to a global community

Founded in 2010 by Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Melinda French Gates, the Giving Pledge is a promise by philanthropists to give the majority of their wealth to charitable causes in their lifetime or wills.

Building on that promise, the Giving Pledge has grown into a vibrant global community of over 250 signatories, representing 30 countries.

The Giving Pledge is a connector for Pledgers, linking signatories to each other and to changemakers across critical sectors to learn and share their experiences in giving both at scale and in the most effective ways to address the world’s most pressing issues. Over 15 years, the Giving Pledge has expanded to include an action-oriented array of unique and valuable learning opportunities—from virtual learning sessions and in-person events to peer cohorts, annual retreats, and learning trips.

Philanthropy has a critical role to play in solving the urgent challenges the world is facing right now,” says Melinda French Gates, co-founder of the Giving Pledge. “The Giving Pledge community has inspired more and smarter giving over the past fifteen years, and the next generation is bringing even more momentum to our work together.”

Pledgers will come together this week at the Giving Pledge’s Annual Gathering, where they will share learnings, build connections, and discuss ways to support thriving families, communities, and the planet through their philanthropy.

“I’m excited to welcome these new Pledgers to our community of people who share a core belief: that we can solve urgent global challenges through giving our resources back to society,” says Bill Gates, co-founder of the Giving Pledge. There’s never been a greater need for philanthropy—and there has never been a greater opportunity to have an impact in our own lifetimes. I’m eager to hear from all the Pledgers about what they’re learning and share ideas about how we can build on the remarkable impact of the last fifteen years of the Giving Pledge for years to come.”

A vibrant community dedicated to impact

Fifteen years in, the Giving Pledge remains deeply grounded in its founding values as a community where philanthropists of all interests can connect, learn, and take action.

Pledgers are committed to supporting meaningful progress around the world, and their giving is carried out anonymously or publicly, individually or collaboratively. Over the past year, Pledgers across the globe continued to demonstrate the power of philanthropic giving to a range of issues, and in all its forms.

Examples of Pledger impact over the past year:

Anil Agarwal

Anil Agarwal has established 8,044 Nand Ghars—modern daycare centers for women and children—across 15 Indian states. The effort has provided support in enhancing nutrition outcomes, early childhood education, access to healthcare, and skill development of women, impacting over 320,000 children and 240,000 women. Over the next five years, over $500 million will be invested in this initiative through the Anil Agarwal Foundation.

The nearly $500 million fund aims at preventing more than 300,000 avoidable maternal-newborn deaths in 10 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030 and providing quality health care for 34 million mothers and babies. This fund was born from the vision of these Pledgers, ELMA Philanthropies, and the Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity.
